In Australia, wildflowers such as Grevillea, Banksia, Hakea, Smokebush and Dryandra are part of a great family of plants, the Proteaceae. The family is also found in southern Africa, South America, and islands of the south-west Pacific, and in all contains over 1400 species. New species are still being discovered in Australia. This book is designed to introduce the reader to those Proteaceae that grow in Western Australia, including the arid and tropical regions. In this State there are some 550 species belonging to 16 genera. Many of these, espeically species found in the South West, occur nowhere else in the world. Each genus is introduced and then a selection of species is illustrated with colour plates to show the great range of shape and colour. The illustrated species are briefly described and discussed. Hints on suitability for cultivation are given under each genus.
